Description:

The exhibition Demarcation Lines presents the works of five artists – Juraj Florek, Anna Kołodziejczyk, Laura Sándor, Flóra Pertics, and Zsuzsa Nemes – who explore the visual culture of Central and Eastern Europe through themes of space, memory, and identity. The featured works reflect that the region’s art is not merely an imitation of Western models, but rather a visual language shaped by lived experiences. Post-socialist urban and rural spaces, inherited material culture, decaying ornamentation, and silent inner courtyards all carry a sensory depth that reveals a distinctive East European perspective. Working across different media – painting, textile, ornamentation – the artists share a sensitive engagement with the past and present of the region. For them, Central and Eastern Europe is not only a physical space but also a cultural and mental landscape shaped by layers of personal and collective memory. These works do more than document; they raise questions: How can the socialist legacy be processed? How does space shape perception, thought, and identity? The exhibition offers reflections on these questions – from both personal and regional viewpoints.
